Abstract Collab is an experience unlike any other where artists and audience members collaborate to create actual works of art in real time – uniting in the joy of the creative process. In ABSTRACT COLLAB, there is no predetermined outcome for creativity is about allowing oneself to dream and seeing where the unexpected will lead. First envisioned by renowned Hilo-artist Kristie Fujiyama Kosmides, ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro, and award-winning filmmaker Tracey Niimi, Abstract Collab will have participants either create on their own individual canvas and/or join Kristie in expressing themselves on a large collective canvas while Jake creates a unique music score in real time – both participants and artists feeding off the collective collaborative energy created as brush strokes, dance, and musical notes fly in an immersive, unrehearsed world where the magic we once felt as kids, returns. Abstract Collab is grounded in the belief that we are all born as creative beings, and as we grow older, some of us lose touch with our inherent creativity and creative selves. Through the power of creative collaboration, co-founders Kristie Fujiyama Kosmides, Jake Shimabukuro, and Tracey Niimi believe it is possible to unlock the inherent creative in all of us. Abstract Collab, is an ever-evolving, active experiment in participatory creativity. In one iteration of this project, Kristie, Jake, and Tracey work together with groups and/or other artists to immerse participants in creating audiovisual multimedia works of art in real time where abstract painting, music and film collide in an exploratory process without inhibitions, expectations, or insecurities. The experience is meant to empower participants to explore their own unique creativity and inspire them to pursue creative practices in their personal and professional lives that foster and support their wellbeing. The trio also work together and with other artists to create pieces for a growing body of multimedia art that reflects this spontaneous and communal process.
